The origin of everything. The soul of the company. Barbadillo is the South and it is the Sea. It is Cadiz and it is the westerly winds. It is Sanl\u00facar and it is tradition. It is a centenary winery, yet it is the future. Barbadillo\u2019s history dates back to 1821; the year in which we first began producing Manzanilla wine and since then we have done nothing but evolve as we continue to produce remarkable wines that are sure to leave their mark on all who consume them.<\/p>\n

Our oenologists put all of their heart and soul into the winemaking processes, and thanks to all of their hard work, as well as the incredible white albariza soils in which our grapes are grown, we are able to offer our consumers truly unique wines. Our oenologists are professional experts who have spent a lifetime building their oenological knowledge through creation and innovation.<\/p>\n

Wines like Castillo de San Diego, one of its emblems. Born in 1975, it has become “Barbadillo Blanco de Albariza” to continue making consumers fall in love. One of the most representative icons of quality of life and enjoyment in the South. Manzanillas, Sherries, Brandies, Vinos de la Tierra de C\u00e1diz… There are many and very valuable jewels that Barbadillo keeps in its cellars.<\/p>\n

Our history<\/h2>\n

With you since 1821<\/h3>\n

The story of Bodegas Barbadillo began in the nineteenth century when Benigno Barbadillo moved to Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda from Mexico with his cousin Manuel L\u00f3pez Barbadillo. Back in Mexico, Benigno had made his fortune through the real estate, pharmacy, loans and the importation of Spanish wines.<\/p>\n

In 1821, when Mexico declared independence from the Spanish Empire, Benigno made the decision to return to Spain with Manuel in tow, and it was there that he purchased his first winery, named El Toro; an fine example of Andalusian architecture. Benigno sold wines throughout Spain, and began to export casks of Sherry to the United Kingdom and America.<\/p>\n

The year 1827 was a real milestone for the winery, since Barbadillo shipped their first casks of Manzanilla to Philadelphia. It was such as success that, just a few months later, Barbadillo launched Pastora on the market. It was the first and\u2014at the time\u2014the only bottled manzanilla in the world<\/p>\n

Since then the company has been passed down from generation to generation of the Barbadillo family.<\/p>\n

Montserrat Molina<\/h2>\n

Winemaker profile<\/h3>\n

Montserrat Molina, was born in Gerona and she graduated from the University of Navarra with an Undergraduate Degree in Pharmacy, specialising in Industrial Pharmacy. She was later awarded a Master\u2019s Degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.<\/p>\n

She began her professional activity in the D\u2019Espolla Cooperative in the Alt. Empord\u00e1 Designation of Origin. In 1997 she began working for Bodegas Barbadillo, where she was involved in building up the R+D department.Her countless achievements include the production of the first \u201cEn Rama\u201d Manzanilla wine (that is to say wine that is bottled directly from the cask) in the Marco de Jerez vineyard area, the recovery of the almost extinct Tintilla de Rota grape, and the production of a sparkling wine using the French Champenoise method.<\/p>\n

White soil characteristic of the undulating topography of the Marco de Jerez vineyard area. Limestone that dazzles white in the dry months. Its high moisture retention capacity and porous qualities allow for the winter rainfall to be stored in the subsoils, therefore meaning that the vines remain nourished even during the dry months.<\/p>\n

Nuestra historia<\/h2>\r\n

Comienza en 1821, cuando Benigno Barbadillo y Ortig\u00fcela (originario de Covarrubias, Burgos), acompa\u00f1ado de su primo Manuel L\u00f3pez Barbadillo, vuelve a Espa\u00f1a tras haber hecho fortuna en M\u00e9xico y tras decretarse la independencia azteca del imperio espa\u00f1ol.<\/p>\r\n

Se instala en Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda y adquiere su primera bodega, El Toro, paradigma de la arquitectura popular andaluza y testigo de los or\u00edgenes de Barbadillo.<\/p>\r\n

Benigno imprimi\u00f3 un estilo propio de todo lo que hizo con la obsesi\u00f3n de ofrecer caldos y excelente calidad. Bajo su gesti\u00f3n la bodega comenz\u00f3 a distribuir r\u00e1pidamente vinos a diferentes puntos de Espa\u00f1a, y export\u00f3 las primeras botas de Jerez a Reino Unido y Am\u00e9rica aprovechando las rutas fluviales y mar\u00edtimas que part\u00edan desde Sanl\u00facar.<\/p>\r\n

El a\u00f1o 1827 represent\u00f3 un hito en la bodega y en toda la provincia de C\u00e1diz. Ese a\u00f1o apareci\u00f3 por primera vez la denominaci\u00f3n Manzanilla en una bota que Benigno envi\u00f3 a Filadelfia. Tal fue el \u00e9xito, que meses despu\u00e9s Barbadillo lanz\u00f3 al mercado Pastora, la primera y entonces \u00fanica manzanilla embotellada del mundo.
Benigno falleci\u00f3 en 1837 y su primog\u00e9nito, Manuel, tom\u00f3 las riendas del negocio y en 1954 constituy\u00f3 formalmente la empresa que hoy se conoce como Bodegas Barbadillo.<\/p>\r\n

Montserrat Molina<\/h2>\r\n

Montserrat Molina, nacida en Girona, es licenciada en Farmacia con la especialidad Industrial por la Universidad de Navarra. Tiene adem\u00e1s un m\u00e1ster en Viticultura y Enolog\u00eda por la Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Catalu\u00f1a.<\/p>\r\n

Comenz\u00f3 su actividad profesional en la Cooperativa D'Espolla, en la D. O. Alt. Empord\u00e1. En 1997 empieza a trabajar para Bodegas Barbadillo, desarrollando el departamento de I+D. Entre algunos de sus logros se encuentra la elaboraci\u00f3n de la primera manzanilla en rama del Marco de Jerez, la recuperaci\u00f3n de la casi extinta Tintilla de Rota y el desarrollo de un espumoso en C\u00e1diz siguiendo el m\u00e9todo franc\u00e9s del Champenoise.<\/p>\r\n

Tierra blanca que caracteriza la topograf\u00eda ondulada de los cerros del Marco de Jerez.\u00a0Caliza, que en los meses secos resulta deslumbrantemente blanca. Con un alto poder retentivo de la humedad, es muy porosa y almacena en el subsuelo la lluvia ca\u00edda en invierno para nutrir la cepa en los meses secos.<\/p>\r\n
