The creation of the Somontano de Sobrarbe regional cooperative was a symbol of the area\u2019s commitment to quality winemaking as a driver of the economy and was the first step towards the birth of the Somontano designation of origin, which would be approved in 1984. Its story began long before it came into being. At the end of the 1960s, on his travels abroad, Antonio Pedro Barbadillo Romero (Toto) discovered some white wines that paired perfectly with seafood, due to their milder, fruitier flavour. Upon his return, he decided to start experimenting and finally managed to create the wine he had always wanted, calling it a \u2018white table wine\u2019. 1975 saw the first edition of a pioneer wine that would open up a category of its own and that we all know today as #Barbadillo, but that is really called Castillo de San Diego after the street where the winery was located, next to the castle in Sanl\u00facar. A good land for growing vines, when phylloxera devastated France at the end of the 19th century, some winemakers from that country set their sights on this area for production and one of them, Francisco Lalanne, even settled here and founded a winery that still exists today. In the 1960s, with the rise of the cooperative movement amongst small winegrowers in the area, the Somontano del Sobrarbe Cooperative was set up, which would later become Bodegas Pirineos. In 2007, it became part of The Barbadillo Group. Su historia comienza mucho antes de su creaci\u00f3n. A finales de los a\u00f1os 60, Antonio Pedro Barbadillo Romero (Toto) descubri\u00f3 en sus viajes por el extranjero vinos blancos que por su sabor m\u00e1s suave y afrutado maridaban perfectamente con el pescado y el marisco. A su vuelta decide experimentar hasta que logr\u00f3, por fin, el vino que siempre quiso, al que llamaron \u201cvino blanco de mesa\u201d. En 1975 se lanza la primera edici\u00f3n de un vino pionero que abr\u00eda una nueva categor\u00eda y que todos conocemos por Barbadillo, pero llamado Castillo de San Diego, tomando el nombre de la calle donde estaba la bodega, justo al lado del Castillo de Sanl\u00facar. En los a\u00f1os sesenta, al calor del movimiento cooperativo los peque\u00f1os viticultores de la zona se cre\u00f3 la Cooperativa del Somontano del Sobrarbe, que con el tiempo se convertir\u00eda en Bodegas Pirineos.
