On the occasion of the 2026 international voyage of the Spanish Navy training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, this Special Edition of Vermut Atamán is born — a personalized bottle that pays tribute to the historic bond between Barbadillo and the sea.
Inspired by the artistic barrel accompanying the ship on its training cruise, this limited edition symbolizes the meeting of two centuries-old institutions united by tradition, excellence, and the international projection of Spanish culture.
Since 1827, when Barbadillo wines first crossed the Atlantic bound for Philadelphia, the sea has been an essential part of our story. Today, more than two centuries later, this special edition once again carries the essence of Sanlúcar to the world.
Vermut Atamán is crafted primarily from Manzanillas sourced from the historic Angioletti and El Toro cellars, both located in Sanlúcar’s Barrio Alto district. It is inspired by the old Atamán reserves — quinine wines and early vermouths that have rested in Bodegas Barbadillo for decades.
Atamán is a vermouth brand registered by Bodegas Barbadillo in January 1943. We sometimes wonder what inspired Manuel Barbadillo to choose this name at the time. We do not have the answer. What we do know is that this Caucasian gentleman, a general of the Cossack armies, now returns to the world once again — full of character. Of character… and aromas of wormwood, quassia, bitter orange, rosemary, and elderberries.
